FAQ – Helpful Tips and Insights

Thinking of Becoming a Creativity Junkie?

Explore our FAQs to quickly discover helpful tips and insights to help you on your journey.

What essential art supplies do I need to start?

I recommend a sketchbook, a pencil, and your artist self to get started.

How can I overcome a lack of inspiration or creative block?

Get rid of the blank page. Start scribbling, spill your coffee, or throw some paint on it. Just keep that pencil moving and something will break on through.

What if I can’t draw?

Do it anyways. Make marks, start with a line, and play with your pencil. Start making that connection between your hand and your brain. Experience the paper, and don’t worry if it doesn’t look like anything. You are building that connection.

Is it okay to copy other artists or use photos as references?

Yes, I know it’s a common thing to see “if you copy other artists, you only learn their mistakes”. This is total bologna. There are no mistakes. Turn your dog, or cat, into the Mona Lisa. But don’t try to claim something that is not yours, that is not cool… Give credit where credit is due.

Is tracing cheating?

Absolutely not! Tracing connects the hand to the brain. You learn how to control your pencil, connect lines, and learn about space, not the intergalactic kind, but it will help you gain confidence and make you want to create more. Just don’t try to claim something that is not yours, that is not cool… Give credit where credit is due.

How long will it take to get better?

If you can develop a habit that involves doodles, sketches, or painting every day, you will start seeing improvement each week, maybe even each day. There’s really no perfect answer here since it is entirely up to you. Remember: don’t take the bad days personally, we all have them.
